Er is een initiatief van het Library of Congres om uniek materiaal (o.a. manuscripten, multimedia materiaal) vanuit verschillende culturen over de gehele wereld in een World Digital Library onder te brengen. In samenwerking met openbare onderzoeksinstituten, bibliotheken en met financiële steun van private geldschieters (Google heeft al 3 miljoen dollar geïnvesteerd!) kan dan al begonnen worden met het digitaliseren van het materiaal.

Once developed, the Library’s WDL plan would be made available to libraries, content owners and their supporters. This initiative will complement the large-scale national project that Congress has directed the Library to lead: the formation of a network of institutional partners to build a digital preservation architecture for collecting, preserving and making accessible important material available only in digital form. "

In Nederland is men ook bezig met het behouden van informatie in toekomstbestendige informatiesystemen. En ook hier zien we het nut in van samenwerken in een breder platform.
